What is a Touchdown, and How Many Points is it Worth?

In American football, a touchdown is the most valuable way to score points.

It occurs when a player legally carries the ball into the opposing team's end zone or catches a pass while in the end zone. Scoring a touchdown grants the scoring team 6 points.

Scoring a Touchdown

To score a touchdown, the player in possession of the ball must:

The ball does not need to touch the ground in the end zone for a touchdown to be scored. As long as the ball crosses the goal line plane while the player has possession and is in bounds, it is a touchdown.

Points Awarded for a Touchdown

A touchdown is worth 6 points. After scoring a touchdown, the team has two options for their extra point attempt:

  1. Point After Touchdown (PAT): The scoring team can attempt a one-point conversion by kicking the ball through the uprights from the 2-yard line. This is known as a PAT or extra point.
  2. Two-Point Conversion: Instead of kicking for one point, the team can attempt to advance the ball into the end zone again from the 2-yard line. If successful, they are awarded 2 additional points.

If the PAT kick is missed or the two-point conversion attempt fails, the score remains 6-0 in favor of the team that scored the touchdown.

Importance of Touchdowns

Touchdowns are the most valuable way to score in football. Scoring a touchdown puts pressure on the opposing team to match the score to keep the game close. Teams that can consistently score touchdowns often win games. While field goals are worth 3 points and safeties are worth 2 points, neither of these scores can match the impact of a 6-point touchdown. Touchdowns are the primary objective for offenses, and the defense's main goal is to prevent the opposing team from scoring them.

A touchdown is the most important scoring play in American football, worth 6 points to the scoring team. By carrying the ball into the end zone or catching a pass there, a player can earn their team valuable points that often decide the outcome of a game.
