Market‘It was horrendous’: Durham captain relieved WSL2 club survived after fears of folding

Sarah Wilson delighted fresh investment was found

‘It honestly feels now that nothing’s ever happened’

The Durham captain, Sarah Wilson, has spoken of her relief over the fresh investment that saved the club this summer, after what she recalled as a “horrendous” period worrying that the Women’s Super League 2 club could fold.

Durham finished 10th in England’s second tier last term and have been ever-present in WSL2 since 2014 but their ability to remain in the division was in major doubt when the club released a statement on 8 June warning that they would have to “cease operations” if they could not find fresh investment within 21 days. Later in June they were rescued when the local businessman and South Shields FC co-owner Geoff Thompson, together with his co-investor, agreed to acquire a majority stake in the club.
Cont

PerformanceDan Brown gets fast start at Open but may not make fag end of tournament

Son of pig farmer fears he will run out of puff

Brown finished 10th at 2024 Open at Royal Troon

It is quite something to challenge at the Open and simultaneously represent a potential fire hazard. Dan Brown’s propensity to smoke on the golf course is a throwback – Ben Hogan and Arnold Palmer enjoyed a puff mid-round – yet not particularly notable in ordinary circumstances.

This is no typical Open. The scorched conditions at Royal Birkdale mean spectators are being asked to “maintain vigilance” over anything that could constitute a fire risk. Players are under precisely the same instructions. Brown reckons he smoked “seven or eight” cigarettes while en route to an excellent 66, which placed the 31-year-old in a share of the lead until Jackson Suber’s late run to five under par. Brown seems unlikely to find himself at the fag end of proceedings by the Open’s conclusion.
<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/jul/16/dan-brown-ge
